PHILADELPHIA, UNITED STATES, January 20, 2010: The BAPS Swaminarayan Temple of Middletown joined in a weeklong celebration of unity, reflecting on the life of Martin Luther King Jr. Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament sat before the statue of the Hindu god Ganesha, the monsignor of a Roman Catholic Church politely accepted the ceremonial flames of arati, as a collage of faiths - Buddhists, Christians and Jews - gathered to commemorate the life of Martin Luther King.

Some may see Hinduism and a civil rights leader from America to be a strange pairing. But there are strong ties of similarities between the non-violent protests tactics of King and Mahatma Gandhi. “King was a teacher who saw great value in using the tactics of Mahatma Gandhi in overcoming the unjust laws of segregation,” said temple member Susketu Patel. Gandhi used non-violent protests to get the British out of India.
