VARANASI, INDIA, February 7, 2010: How about going for pain management with yoga, meditation and exercise? While these practices have long been associated with decreasing muscle tension and reducing stress, ayurveda experts of Banaras Hindu University believe that they are also effective alternatives to medication.

As per Dr. D.N. Pande of Section of Sangyaharan, department of Shalya Tantra, BHU, scientific studies have shown that these practices are linked with production of endorphins, natural pain-killers in the body that reduce pain. “They are also free from side-effects including toxicity shown by most of the pain-relieving drugs (analgesics) including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), narcotics and antidepressants, when they are used for long time,” he added.

Saying that non-pharmacological options for pain management have started to garner attention, he also added procedures like acupuncture, acupressure, applying heat or massaging were fast gaining popularity for reducing pain and stress.
