INDIA, January 17 2010: With an expected price of US$1 per bottle, the negotiation of Ganga water is underway. In place of buying the ubiquitous white plastic cans of 5 liters and filling it with Gangajal yourself, expect to buy branded cans of the holy water.
Until now, a couple of offers from private companies are pending with the government for permission, planning a large-scale operation. Stopping the go-ahead are calculations of revenues the government can make from it, and concerns that water will be overdrawn beyond permissible limits.
However, there is a collective ethical doubt, to what extent the practice of selling Gangajal would be righteous.
